The ‘Foundation Stone’ laying ceremony of the Footwear Design & Development Institute (FDDI) was held on March 5, 2014 at Banur, District SAS Nagar (Mohali), Chandigarh-Patiala Highway, Punjab.
The ‘Foundation Stone’ was laid by Smt. Preneet Kaur, Hon’ble Minister of State for External Affairs, Govt. of India at 9 A.M.

On this occasion, Mr. Karan Avtar Singh, IAS, Principal Secretary, Department of Industries & Commerce, Government of Punjab, Mr. Vikas Pratap, IAS, Secretary, Industries and Commerce, Government of Punjab, Mr. T.L. Khosla, Joint Director Cum-Industrial Advisor, Department of Industries & Commerce, Government of Punjab and other officials from the Government of Punjab were present.

The Hon’ble Minister of Commerce & Industry, Govt. of India, Mr. Anand Sharma was to lay the ‘Foundation Stone’ of the FDDI, Banur, Punjab. However, his flight landed late in Chandigarh and he reached only after the Election Commission had announced the poll schedule.
The Hon’ble Minister of Commerce & Industry, Govt. of India, Mr. Anand Sharma joined over the Hi-Tea at the venue where Mr. Atul Chaturvedi, IAS, Joint Secretary, Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion, Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India, Mr. Raajeev j Lakhara, Managing Director, FDDI, Mr. Sameer Kumar Srivastava, Executive Director, FDDI were present.
In his 'Welcome Speech', the Managing Director of FDDI, Mr. Raajeev j Lakhara, said, “The FDDI, Banur, centre will be designed to cater all needs of footwear, leather products industry & the retail sector such as human resource, design, testing, consultancy etc., and will be a landmark in the development of Punjab.”

This initiative of the Govt. of India will be a big boost for the Leather sector of Punjab having major clusters at Patilala, Bhatinda, Muktsar, Malot, Abohar, Fazilka, Firozpur, Kotakpura, Gurdaspur, Amritsar, Jallandhar etc.
The state-of-the-art campus, dedicated to provide high end training facilities & institutional support services to strengthen the sector will have a capacity to train 850-1000 students which will be fully operational from the academic session 2015-16.
World class Training Infrastructure such as State-of-art manufacturing technology workshops in each area of operation, high end Design studio and product development center with most modern sophisticated softwares smart class rooms, high tech IT lab and a comprehensive Resource Centre are planned to be established to ensure global standards of training and services to the Industries of the region and also to provide sufficient exposure to the students in the campus preparing them excel efficiently across the globe. The Institute, besides the various structured long-term programmes, shall also conduct short term programmes as per the need of the industry.
Residential in-campus hostel for Boys and Girls with a capacity of approx. 500 students, staff quarters, most modern auditorium and Students sports complex are also a part of the planned establishment of infrastructure in the campus.
The campus will also be facilitating many of the SME’s located in the region in producing standard competitive products.
The full-fledged campus of FDDI at Banur will not only cater to the needs of the industry of Punjab but, also the needs of industries located in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand due to its closer proximity.
Around 800 - 1000 people from the adjoining towns & villages were present on this occasion including people from the relevant industries, students & media persons.
