Collaborative research article by FDDI Chennai & Hyderabad faculty, alumni, and a clinical collaborator published in AJPR


A collaborative research article by faculty members of the School of Footwear Design & Production (FDP) of FDDI, Chennai & Hyderabad Campus, its alumni, and by a clinical collaborator has been published in the American Journal of Psychiatric Rehabilitation (AJPR), an internationally reputed journal indexed in Crossref and other major databases.

The research title “The Influence of Retail Visual Merchandising on Impulse Buying and Its Psychological Impact Among Young Adults With Psychiatric Disabilities: Implications for Community-Based Rehabilitation” has been published in Vol. 28, No. 5 on 23rd May 2025.

The contributors of research are Mr. K. Elaiyaraja, Sr. Faculty Gr-II, FDP, Hyderabad Campus, Mr. Vishva Kumar, Sr. Faculty Gr-II, FDP, Chennai Campus, Ms. Durga Saravanan – Physiotherapist, Sports Biomechanist, ANPN Specialist, Mom’s Physiotherapy Clinic, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu and alumni namely Mr. Saiteja Matam, Mr. Hyder Ali. S and Mr. Balaji D, alumni of FDDI.

This pioneering study explores how retail visual merchandising influences impulse buying among young adults with psychiatric disabilities. Using a mixed-methods approach, it found that 73% made unplanned purchases triggered by visual cues like lighting and displays, often followed by anxiety or regret. The study recommends integrating financial literacy, behavioural therapy, and environmental awareness into psychiatric rehabilitation to aid emotional regulation and community reintegration.
