‘National Handloom Day’ observed at FDDI campuses


On 7th August 2024, ‘National Handloom Day’ (NHD) was observed across FDDI campuses to honour the artistry and heritage of handloom weaving, showcasing the intricate craftsmanship that defines timeless tradition.

The Union Government had declared 7th August as the ‘National Handloom Day’ in July 2015 with the objective to generate awareness about importance of India’s handloom industry.

In commemoration of NHD, at FDDI - Jodhpur campus, the students presented a vibrant collection of garments, and accessories that fused age-old practices with contemporary aesthetics.

Mr. Rohit G Russia, founder of ASHA (Assistance and Survival of Handicraft Artisans) was the ‘Chief Guest’ and Mr. Waman Nimjhe, owner of Nimjhe Handloom was the ‘Guest of Honour’ during the NHD celebration at FDDI - Chhindwara campus. A webinar on ‘Traditional Textiles; an Indian Perspective’ was also delivered by Dr. Poonam Aggarwal Thakur, Expert & Former Principal – NIIFT.

FDDI Chennai celebrated NHD by organizing various competitions for students, showcasing their creativity, a visit to the Kanchipuram Weaving Cluster, and an in-depth understanding of handloom textiles. Mr. Sundaresan Tanikachalam, Handloom Inspector, Kanchipuram district was the ‘Guest of Honour’ for the event. The Tamil Nadu Government Weavers' Association (TNGWA) also participated in this celebration by installing an exhibition of handloom sarees and products for display and sale, highlighting the rich heritage of handloom craftsmanship.

At FDDI - Noida campus, display of handloom product made by the students was also done.

The staff of the Institute observed the NHD and attended the office in handwoven/handloom attire. The students also wore handwoven/handloom attire.
