The School of Footwear Design & Production (FDP), FDDI Hyderabad, successfully conducted a two-day workshop titled “Footwear Crafting: A Call to Artisans” under the India Design Language (IDL) Footwear Initiative on 27–28 March 2026.
The session was led by experienced Artisan/Craftsman, Mr. Pampad Phawan Kumar, who shared his expertise in handcrafted footwear with B.Des FDP (2024–28) students. The workshop focused on artisan engagement, regional design understanding, and collaborative learning between artisans, faculty, and students.
Participants gained hands-on experience in design development based on foot measurements, leather fundamentals, tools, pattern-making, cutting, shaping, and assembly techniques. The workshop also covered finishing processes, sustainability aspects, and market opportunities in handmade footwear.
Through live demonstrations and interactive sessions, students explored traditional craftsmanship, including weaving and customization in sandal making, while understanding its relevance in contemporary design. The initiative effectively promoted knowledge exchange and reinforced the importance of preserving traditional skills in modern footwear design.
