Dr. Asma Khan, Senior Faculty and Head, School of Fashion Design (FD), FDDI Jodhpur, has undertaken an insightful research study on the traditional craft of bone and horn artistry, focusing on the remarkable journey and contribution of National Awardee Mr. Jakir Hussain. The research has been published in the International Journal of Applied Social Science - Volume 13 (3 & 4), March & April (2026).
As part of the study, Dr. Khan conducted an in-depth interaction with Mr. Jakir Hussain to document the historical evolution of the craft, his achievements, recognitions and professional journey. The research presents a comprehensive understanding of the sourcing and procurement of raw materials and explores the complete process involved in designing and developing bone and horn craft products.
The study further examined existing and emerging technologies and machinery used in the sector, while highlighting the challenges faced by artisans in production and market access. It also explored both online and offline marketing channels, opportunities for expanding product reach and the growing need for skill development initiatives to strengthen artisan capabilities.
